Neuropathy is a painful and potentially crippling disorder that is common in people with diabetes and often affects people with obesity, yet the underlying reason is poorly understood. Boyd al. now reveal that a diet enriched in ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) triggers peripheral neuropathy in mice, and this effect is reversed by a diet enriched in ω-3 PUFAs. These findings may help explain the high incidence of neuropathies in people with diet-related obesity without diabetes, and may provide a potential target for the prevention and treatment of this metabolic and neurological disorder.

Last, clinical data showed that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs was associated with increased risk of persistent pain, suggesting that anti-inflammatory treatments might have negative effects on pain duration.

The Glycocalyx is a hair like structure that lines and protects our 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Diabetics with uncontrolled blood sugars have a 50% reduction in the Glycocalyx. LOTS of diabetics listen to typical advice of aim for A1Cs of 7%, which is an average blood sugar of 172 mg/dl(DCCT formula). A blood sugar of 172 is more than double normal.
✅"Every cell of the body is nourished by the blood that travels through the capillaries that make up 99% of the circulatory system from head to toe.
Placed end-to-end, scientists estimate they would extend 60,000 miles, enough to go around the earth two-and-a-half times. With every heartbeat, vital nutrients and oxygen are delivered and waste is removed from each cell. This essential function breaks down with aging, poor diet, lack of exercise, genetics, stress, and smoking. New medical science reveals the importance of the healthy structure of the glycocalyx that protects the entire circulatory system.
✅"Hyperglycemia is a major cause for disruption of the endothelial glycocalyx. In fact individuals with hyperglycemia and diabetes are known to have less endothelial glycocalyx. Such a change may explain the endothelial dysfunction and increased microvascular permeability that lead to major complications in the diabetic population."
✅"Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The endothelium interacts with circulating blood through the surface glycocalyx layer. After six days in high glucose media, we observed a decrease in heparan sulfate content coincident with a significant attenuation of the shear-induced hydraulic conductivity response, lower activation of eNOS after exposure to shear, and reduced cell alignment with shear stress. These studies are consistent with a diabetes-induced change to the glycocalyx altering endothelial response to shear stress that could affect the distribution of atherosclerotic plaques."
✅"We present evidence that the 0.5 µm thick gel layer, lining the inner wall of healthy blood vessels, the glycocalyx, is the first line of defence against atherothrombotic disease. All blood vessel linings are coated with this gel, a highly negatively charged structure, rich in anionic sites mostly represented by the sialic acid moieties of glycoproteins and the sulphate and carboxyl groups of heparan-sulphate proteoglycans. Blood flow in arteries is associated with a shear stress at the glycocalyx, which signals the underlying endothelial cells to release nitric oxide (NO), an anti-atherogenic factor."
✅"Hyperglycemia is associated with increased susceptibility to atherothrombotic stimuli. The glycocalyx, a layer of proteoglycans covering the endothelium, is involved in the protective capacity of the vessel wall. We therefore evalu- ated whether hyperglycemia affects the glycocalyx, thereby increasing vascular vulnerability."
✅Very good youtube video by Dr. Gary Fettke about this subject and more.
Bottom line= For health and longevity maintain normal blood sugars, normal non-diabetic blood sugars. Even diabetics deserve normal non-diabetic blood sugars. Diabetics are human too.
