North Korea Blows Up South Korea Liaison Office, Seoul Says

North Korea destroyed an inter-Korean liaison office on its side of the border Tuesday, South Korea said, shortly after threatening military action in the region over anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent into its territory.

“North Korea blew up the inter-Korean liaison office,” South Korea’s Unification Ministry said in a text message. The move comes about a week after Kim Jong Un’s regime abandoned its operations at the facility that once allowed the rivals to communicate around the clock.

Smoke and an explosion were observed rising from an area close to the industrial park in the North Korean border city of Kaesong, the Yonhap News Agency said. The industrial park was jointly established with South Korea, but has been shuttered amid tensions between the two rivals. The site is also home to a liaison office intended to maintain relations between Seoul and Pyongyang.

The facility was opened in 2018 the spirit of rapprochement advocated by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and was part of moves to reduce threats along the border, where the two countries have stationed about 1 million troops. It allowed for constant communication between the two sides for the first time since the start of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Cheong Seong-chang, director of the Centre for North Korean Studies at the Sejong Institute, said the latest action taken by North Korea illustrates its “strong will” to “completely shut off” its relations with the South.

“North Korea is working toward re-militarization of the Kaesong industrial complex,” Cheong siad. “And blowing the liaison office in the complex would just be the first step on their road map.”

Pourquoi les NK sont si agressifs en ce moment ?

Peut-être Kim Yo Jong (la soeur) veut démontrer pouvoir.

"North Korea: What's behind the liaison office demolition?

this provocation, and others yet to come, may be linked to an internal North Korean effort to build further legitimacy for Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister. After all, she was the one to have announced the impending destruction of the inter-Korean Liaison Office in a statement over the weekend.

The fact that Kim Jong-un's younger sister has been front-and-centre in this tension-building suggests that this could be about burnishing her credentials as someone who can be tough on the North Korea's enemies.

The motivations for the attack likely trace to three converging issues. One is North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's feelings of betrayal following the failed summits with President Donald Trump. Kim entered those summits with an expectation of securing relief from a punishing economic sanctions regime but received none.

Second, North Korea's economy is under strain from the combination of restricted trade with China due to Covid-19 and the escalating US campaign of maximum sanctions pressure, increasing the imperative for sanctions relief.

Third, Kim Jong-un's sister is undergoing a process of establishing bona fides as a person of authority and needs to show strength and competence to both elites and the militarist elder generation in North Korea. It is unclear if she is being groomed to succeed Kim Jong-un given his ill health.

Kim Jong-Un 'is in a coma and his sister is set to take control', claims S Korean diplomat

A South Korean diplomat has claimed Kim Jong-un is in a coma and his sister is set to take charge of North Korea.

Chang Song-min, an ex-aide to late-South Korean president Kim Dae-jung, claimed North Korea is hiding the truth about its leader's deteriorating health and that he understands the dictator is in a comatose state.

Speaking with local media, Chang Song-min said: "I assess him to be in a coma, but his life has not ended."

He said Kim's sister, Kim Yo-jong, is now ready to take over as the hermit state's new supreme leader.

"A complete succession structure has not been formed, so Kim Yo-jong is being brought to the fore as the vacuum cannot be maintained for a prolonged period."

This week, South Korea's spy agency, the National Intelligence Service (NIS), reported that Kim will gradually transfer authority to his sister "to ease stress" despite his young age.

The claims come after it was reported Kim had promoted his sister to second-in-command earlier this week.

Kim Yo-jong is now in charge of North Korean policy towards the US and South Korea, making her de-facto deputy.

Chang Song-min's claims come despite North Korea media releasing images purportedly showing Kim Jong-un attending a government meeting last week. However these images could not be verified.

The 36-year-old North Korean leader has only been seen a handful of times this year following speculation of a "botched" heart operation in April.

But North Korea the quashed rumours after releasing footage of Kim cutting ribbon at the opening of a fertiliser factory in May.

"Analysis: 'I have failed' - Kim Jong Un shows tearful side in confronting North Korea's hardships"

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to shed tears at the weekend as he thanked citizens for their sacrifices, in the most striking demonstration yet of how he is relying on his “man of the people” persona to tackle his country’s deepening crises.
