Le serial killer qui échappait à la justice depuis quarante ans a été finalement identifié grâce à son ADN :

Authorities have arrested a former police officer who is suspected of being one of California’s most prolific serial killers and rapists — the Golden State killer.

In the 40 years since the Original Night Stalker began his campaign of terror in Sacramento and moved south through Oakland, Santa Barbara and Orange counties, he had remained unidentified. The attacker was also dubbed the East Area rapist and the Golden State killer, and authorities say he is responsible for 12 killings, 45 rapes and more than 120 residential burglaries between 1976 and 1986.

@Fagotto 6 ans d'après ce que j'ai lu (de 1973 à 1976 à Exeter puis à Auburn de 1976 à 1979, date de son renvoi).

Un résumé de l'histoire :

The last thing I would want to hear is what over fifty women and couples in North-Central California heard from 1976–1979 and at least ten people heard in Southern California from 1979–1986.

These people became unwitting hosts to a most unwanted, uninvited guest, a maniac who has been called East Area Rapist (EAR) the Original Night Stalker (ONS—not to be confused with “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez who killed from 1984–1985) the Diamond Knot Killer, or more recently the Golden State Killer.

Targeting first women who were alone and then couples he started his career as a violent rapist who would invade homes waking his victims often by shining a flashlight in their eyes and barking orders at them through clenched teeth. He would insist he was only looking for money and would at knife or gunpoint tie up his victim before raping them often several times while also ransacking the house and eating—sometimes even cooking. He would reduce his victims to terror by threatening to kill them and wandering in and out, often making them think he had left before coming in again. As time went on he became more bold entering homes and making women tie up men, and then tying the women. He would then place dishes such as a cup and saucer on the male and tell him that if he heard them rattling he would kill them. He had a habit of stalking through yards and entering houses in advance to hide ligatures and to set up ways for him to get in and out quickly. He was not afraid of either guns or dogs, and seemed to enjoy the challenge. In one case he came in holding the owner’s dog in his arms. In another he had entered the house earlier, found the owner’s gun and took the bullets out. During a town meeting to discuss the unknown attacker one man stood up and announced that the police were “lying” and that “no man would allow his wife to be raped in front of him.” A few months later he and his wife fell victim to him.

Police were able to find that he seemed to hit most single-story “ranch” style homes and often looked in windows first. He often had several potential targets in a neighborhood and would call victims both before and after attacks. He had a habit of taking small, token items that seemed to have personal meaning for the victims.

As bold as he was many victims felt as though he was “going through the motions” during the actual rapes and seemed more interested in control and causing distress. The few people who did physically confront him (such as one woman who, with her two daughters he attempted to tie up) often were able to “chase him out” if it was clear he losing control of the situation.

For reasons still unknown the attacks in Northern California ended and began in the south. In October 1979 a couple in Goleta California were woken by a violent intruder who tied them up and separated them. He began to wander the house muttering “I’ll kill them, I’ll kill them…” causing both to panic. The wife managed to get to her feet and hop into the front yard and start screaming while the husband managed to crawl into the back. With a hue and cry raised he fled, and was even chased by a neighbor who was an FBI agent. After that all known people who encountered him did not survive.

Starting in December 1979 through July 1981 nine people, Drs. Robert Offerman and Alexandria Manning, Lyman and Charlene Smith, Keith and Patrice Harrington, Manuela Witthuhn (her husband was in the hospital that night) and Cheri Domingo along with her sometimes boyfriend Gregory Sanchez were assaulted and killed, either having been shot, or, beaten to death. Debbi Domingo, daughter of Cheri had left home because of issues between her and her mother—and was staying in a teen shelter the night of the murder. For much of her life she was wracked with guilt for not being there, despite the fact in all probability she too would have been killed. In May 1986 this “Night Stalker” as some papers had called him then came back out and killed 18-year-old Janelle Cruz, who had been home alone while her family was on vacation.

Because of the size of California and lack of cooperation at the time the two crime sprees were not officially connected until DNA evidence was used in 2001. To this day the crimes have not been solved and the EAR/ONS Golden State Killer remains the most prolific uncaught serial sex offender in California history, and despite not being as well known as other serial killers in popular imagination he is one of the most terrifying killers of the 20th century.

***UPDATE*** It was announced today, April the 25th 2018—-an arrest has been made in this case. Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, a former police officer and resident of Sacramento has been arrested and is being charged with multiple accounts of rape, murder, murder with special circumstances and burglary.
