Update: The Yi Peng is trapped.

The cargo ship Yi Peng, main suspect in recent sabotage of Baltic undersea cables, has spent the last week anchored 100m from Danish territorial waters in the company of two Danish warships, while what one presumes are frantic negotiations go on behind the scenes.

It appears that the Yi Peng is trapped in international waters in the Kattegatt sea (see map). Leaving the Danish straits would require the Yi Peng to pass through either Swedish or Danish territorial waters, giving either navy the right to seize it. Ships normally traverse territorial waters by invoking the UNCLOS "right of innocent passage", which presumably does not apply when a ship is the sole suspect in the recent destruction of vital EU infrastructure.

Yesterday the Swedish government issued a formal request for the ship to return to Swedish territorial waters to be investigated. The Yi Peng has made no attempt to comply with the request since.

Nuke them all
