WASHINGTON, Jan 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - White House economic chief Lawrence Summers is the target of a whispering campaign within his own party. His detractors blame his deficit-phobia for a skimpy stimulus and resulting jobless recovery in the United States.

That's misguided -- the controversial economist instead deserves praise for fiscal sanity.

Commonsense policy is often the first victim in an election year. Many Democrats fret that a toxic tandem of so-so economic growth and stubbornly high unemployment could result in huge losses in congressional elections in November.
