Television exit polls suggest Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is headed for an overwhelming victory in Japan's general election.

The polls suggest his party may be set to rule without a coalition partner for the first time in 15 years.

Mr Koizumi called the snap ballot after parliament blocked plans to privatise Japan's post office - the centrepiece of his economic reform proposals.

Je ne suis pas fan du bonhomme, mais il faut dire qu'il a vraiment bien joué son coup, en éliminant ses opposants au sein du parti (non pas vial des exclusions, mais en leur opposant d'autres candidats PLD). La voie semble ouverte pour une privatisation de la poste. A observer de près: son attitude vis à vis de la Chine dans les années qui viennent.

Il n'y aura pas de privatisation mais mineika. C'est différent.

The Japanese phrase for privatization used in the current election, mineika, is not about real privatization; it is about who will control the postal savings funds. In English, the purest sense of privatization means the transfer of assets or service delivery from government to the private sector. The upcoming election is about who will control the huge assets of the Japanese postal system -- the politicians or the semi-independent 250,000 postal workers.
