A new search engine for 3D printed gun parts and other patented objects is coming within a month, according to Austin-based organization Defense Distributed. The upcoming "Defcad.com" is set to be a new, improved version of of the organization's current 3D file catalog, Defcard.org. It will host paid advertising alongside search results to help pay for the organization's growth, as founder Cody Wilson explained in an interview with Forbes' Andy Greenberg. Wilson, a 24-year-old law student, is also due to reveal more details at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas, this afternoon.

for the new Defcad.com search engine this morning, in which Wilson provides a brief summary of the organization's history and philosophy, highlighting the fact that 3D printer company Makerbot and its CEO Bre Prettis took down 3D printed gun files from Makerbot's file catalog, Thingiverse, in December last year. In the trailer, Wilson promises "no takedowns," on Defcad.com. He also says, "Defcad stands against artificial scarcity, intellectual property, copyright, patentable objects, and regulation in all of its forms."

 

 

The move comes on the heels of Defense Distributed's recently published videos of successful test firings of new 3D printed automatic weapon parts, including a from-scratch high capacity AR magazine design it calls "Cuomo," after New York State's gun-control supporting Democratic governor, and a new AK magazine named after another gun control proponent, California's Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein.

At the Command of the State Department, Defense Distributed Pulls Its 3D Printed Gun Blueprints

Defense Distributed, the Texas-based nonprofit that wants to empower people to 3D print their own guns, has hit a bit of a legal snag. According to founder Cody Wilson, DEFCAD, the open source weapon-printing project powered by Defense Distributed, received a letter (embedded below) from the State Department’s Office of Defense Trade Compliance, telling him to remove the blueprints of the Liberator, his 3D printed gun, from the web so that they may be reviewed by the department.

The group’s website currently has a red banner appended to the top that reads, “DEFCAD files are being removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls. Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.”

“We got an official letter from the Secretary of State, telling me who they were, what their authority was under U.S. law and telling me they want to review these files to see if they’re class one munitions,” Mr. Wilson told Betabeat by phone. “That includes blueprints.”

In the letter, embedded below, the State Department says that Defense Distributed may have released data that is controlled by the International Traffic in Arms Regulation without getting prior authorization. This would put the company’s actions in conflict with–oh boy–the Arms Export Control Act.

“Please note that disclosing (including oral or visual disclosure) or transferring technical data to a foreign person, whether in the United States or abroad, is considered an export,” reads the letter. It also says that until Defense Distributed has received the legal all-clear, the company “should treat the above technical data as ITAR-controlled. This means that all such data should be removed from public access immediately.”

Mr. Wilson believes that he is immune to the Department of State’s review procedures as Defense Distributed is a nonprofit and the blueprints are protected under the public domain.

“I immediately complied and I’ve taken down the files,” Mr. Wilson said. “But this is a much bigger deal than guns. It has implications for the freedom of the web.”

Of course, since this is the Internet, the files are already all over the web, even though Mr. Wilson complied with the takedown.

“I still think we win in the end,” he added. “Because the files are all over the Internet, the Pirate Bay has it–to think this can be stopped in any meaningful way is to misunderstand what the future of distributive technologies is about.”

Petite colle: comment varier l’alimentation des astronautes qui ne mangent que des produits lyophilisés quand ils sont dans l’espace? La Nasa, qui cherche – entre autres –  la réponse à cette question a offert une bourse de 125.000 dollars (96.000 euros) à un ingénieur, Anjan Contractor, qui travaille sur une «imprimante» alimentaire.

La machine fonctionnerait grâce à un simple principe de «cartouches» rechargeables, contenant chacune non pas de l’encre mais des éléments nutritifs (sucre, protéines, huile…). Des denrées qui pourraient se conserver dans les cartouches «peut-être pendant 30 ans», a indiqué l’ingénieur au site Quartz.

 

«Changer notre perception de la nourriture».

 

La pizza, qui se construit par «couches», est la candidate idéale pour l’expérience. L’appareil va d’abord délivrer une pâte, cuite durant l’«impression» puis une sauce tomate formée avec des cartouches de poudre de tomate, d’eau et d’huile. La tarte italienne est ensuite finalisée avec une «strate de protéine» (animale ou végétale).

L’ingénieur estime  que sa machine pourra contribuer à la lutte contre la faim dans le monde. «Notre système alimentaire actuel ne peut fournir à manger à 12 milliards de personnes», estime Anjan Contractor qui veut «changer notre perception de la nourriture». D’après lui, un des avantages de son appareil est qu’il permet à chacun d’ «élaborer ses plats en fonction de ses besoins nutritionnels».
