Thread de @IndoPac_Info (en fait, une suite de tweets plutôt qu'un fil) : 1) If there is conflict with #Taiwan in August, most likely it won't be full scale war, but what #China would call step 1 of reunification with Taiwan, the taking of Taiwanese islands next to China's coast & in the #SouthChinaSea Taiwan strait waters won't be calm until October. 2) The actual dangerous time for a full Chinese invasion of #Taiwan is October since the Taiwan strait waters are calm at that time of the year, facilitating amphibious operations. Such situation won't happen again until April. Before October, only a limited conflict is likely. 3) In such limited conflict scenario, #China would take the small Taiwanese islands next to China's coast; large garrisons there, but they can't hold. #Taiwan's Pratas Islands (Dongsha) & Tai Ping (Itu Aba) islands in the #SouthChinaSea are easy targets for China. 4) Those with contacts in #China know that they've been preparing for war with #Taiwan, #Japan & #US for the last few months. Pelosi's trip to Taiwan is a golden opportunity for Xi for limited action as the internal situation is restive & the economy is very bad. Very dangerous! 5) These #Chinese exercises in the #SouthChinaSea could easily escalate into offensive actions to take the Taiwanese islands of Pratas Islands (Dongsha) & Tai Ping (Itu Aba) if Pelosi goes to #Taiwan Such limited actions are unlikely to have a western response. 6) Chinese exercises in the #SouthChinaSea Note the self propelled guns firing from the deck of a cargo ship to support a landing. Airborne forces with helicopters would play a significant role in an invasion of #Taiwan Roll on - roll off ships would also be massively used. 7) Until recently, #China was not in a rush to take #Taiwan, but the current int. geopolitical situation has changed the calculus. Now everything points to China trying to take Taiwan this year, while war rages in #Ukraine, the US economy deteriorates & while Biden is in office. 8 ) We had a unipolar world since the end of the cold war, but now #China & #Russia challenge #US hegemony A multipolar world is inevitable, but the transition to it is dangerous. Clashes are happening already & more are expected. #Taiwan is getting coughed up in such transition 9) For #China, taking #Taiwan is not just about Taiwan, the #CCP has bigger goals A) Taking Taiwan breaks the first island chain B ) The war likely involving #Japan & #US, the plan is to kick the US from the west Pacific & force Japan to accept de facto (chinese) hegemony in the region 10) #Japan knows that if #China takes #Taiwan, Okinawa is next. China recently destroyed a mock up of a Japanese AWACS plane with ballistic missiles. It's clear that China plans to hit US & Japanese bases in case of war. China could possibly attack all 3 countries at once. 11) If #China attacks #Taiwan, the Japanese Sakishima islands, which are very close to Taiwan and now have bases that are very important to help Taiwan, will likely become a target of China. China will likely also attempt to set up a base on the Senkaku islands. 12) The #USNavy #USSRonaldReagan carrier group is in the #SouthChinaSea right now, but frankly, it's presence there doesn't provide real deterrence. In the era of hypersonic missiles, I don't have much faith in aircraft carriers, at least until there are effective lasers. 13) #Taiwan has been very complacent in regards to defence 4-6 months of military service. Reserves rarely train & when they do is almost useless. Low defense spending. People look down on army service. Such mistakes are usually fatal. #Israel should be the model. 14) #China today started massive sudden live firing exercises in Fujian Province, which faces #Taiwan China issued a navigation warning for waters near Yiqi Island, Fujian. Combat helicopters Z-19 of the 72nd Army Aviation Brigade, #PLA Eastern Combat Command Zone in Fujian 15) #Taiwan's Armed Forces carried out the live-fire part of the annual Han Kuang exercises across Taiwan and its outlying islands between July 26 and 29 Over 20 different Navy & Coast Guard vessels took part in the exercise as well as fighter jets. Taiwan conducts Han Kuang 2022 large-scale exercise 16) #Taiwan is preparing its citizens for war. Nationwide drills are being conducted that inform people where to seek shelter in case #China attacks. Just exercises for now, but tension with China is very high right now.
