José Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Non-lethal ray gun aims to quell riotersBy Thomas Harding, Defence Correspondent Last Updated: 2:40am GMT 26/01/2007 A ray gun that can blast out intense heat to control rioters and disable terrorists was unveiled by American military chiefs yesterday. Designed to cut down on civilian casualties in hostile countries, the device can blast out temperatures over 130°F at a range of up to 550 yards. The Active Denial System, or "Silent Guardian", penetrates clothes, suddenly heating up the skin. The effect, said to be like a blast from an oven, is enough to cause discomfort but no lasting harm, according to the military. "This is a breakthrough technology that's going to give our forces a capability they don't now have," said Theodore Barna, an American defence official. It was likely to enter service with US troops within three years, he said. The device, which is mounted on a Humvee and uses a large bullet-proof dish antenna, has cost $60 million (£30 million) to develop over the past five years. Raytheon, the company which worked on it, hopes to create a multi-billion-pound world market. The US military said more than 10,000 people had been exposed to the weapon since testing began 12 years ago. There had been no injuries requiring medical attention during the five-year advanced development programme. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml…6/wraygun26.xml
