For the second summer a row, the Rothbard Institute organises the Rothbard Summer University, from September 10 through 13, 2009. The Rothbard Summer University is the perfect occasion for a four-day investigation of both theoretical and practical aspects of the free society. In the sheltered environment of the Old Abbey of Kortenberg we engage in an intensive programme of seminars and discussions on economic theory, the current crisis, philosophy of law and political theory, proposals for concrete reforms, and more. This in combination with time for leisure and a lot of opportunity for input from the participants.

Programme

The economic crisis is far from over, and a fundamental research project aimed at finding the causes and possible solutions is of the essence. At the Summer University we thoroughly assess questions as: Which theories have allowed for the development of such a problem? What are the parallells between the current crisis and the Great Depression? What are the possible ways to reform the banking system in a sustainable and sound manner?

However, during the four days at Kortenberg we will go beyond the economical question of welfare and the workings of the market system. We also discuss the question as to what the conditions are for liberty and a just society. We investigate the deeper foundation for individual rights and enquire into how and where those rights are undermined or weakened. The last day of the conference we look ahead to the possibilities and chances to bring about lasting change in society.
