Taking a stance with outrage for this sort of thing is 'in itself' an over exaggeration of an outdated historical misunderstanding which is completely out of context. I mean let's face it, why add fuel and build a fire ? Let's not be pretentious and assume that we understand the purpose or consequence of what it means to wear feathers as an aboriginal person. And if those parents who cry outrage are also not aboriginals who are they really trying to be anyway ? How presumptuous can one be to believe that wearing an indigenous headdress on the first day of school to be intended with teaching disrespect? Does anyone really believe that this sort of activity to be taken as a mockery of disrespect? Maybe we need to take a chill pill on this one and try focusing on the more outright racists problems of the world which are plaguing the US, Europe and other parts of the world where there is real blood being spilt over religion, fanaticism and jungle fever!

I have a BA major in Canadian history btw. I studied the plight and history of Iroquois and Algonquin tribes. Racism is often perpetuated by creating fires where there is no real fuel or harmful issue to begin with. Wearing an aboriginal headdress has nothing to do with genocide and is definitely not referring to murder or being ignorant of the past. On the contrary, not including these headdresses in the classrooms would be a cruel and cowardly attitude which is much more ignorant of Canadian history. There needs to be an 'open door' discussion which embraces Canadian aboriginal history in a healthy way and not with a hypochondria or overly sensitive fear of using symbology as a tool for education. There is nothing ignorant in teaching young children by visually celebrating the unique cultural history of the Algonquin and Iroquois tribes in Canadian Schools.

Sorry, but I don't support pretentious 'defensism' in this case just because it makes one feel like they are making some sort of difference with political correctness. To believe that banishing aboriginal headdresses in schools will actually help teach a proper story of historical colonialism is a farce. The terrible occupation and history of the treatment of aboriginals in Canada is far worse and much more complex than wearing an aboriginal headress in an attempt to educate children about it. Sorry, but removing them from the educational process doesn't help teach children anything valuable in terms of fighting racism. Do children or even Candian adults actually know what they represent? Perhaps it would be more valuable to tell the actual story here rather than worring about wearing one. Most of them were actually designed as specially appointed war bonets primarily worn by brave male warriors & Chiefs in battle located mainly in the Canadian western plains and American midwest. I agree with you that they should not only be used as decoration without any explanaton of their significance. They could however be used and worn in an educational context attached to a proper story of their origin. No harm there as long as it is done properly.
