Togo-sponsored resolution called to phase out traditional map that depicts continent as similar size to Greenland
The United Nations has voted to adopt a resolution for the world to formally phase out the traditional Mercator map of the globe in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa’s size.
In a session at its headquarters in New York, the UN general assembly officially retired the 16th-century Mercator projection in favour of one based on the more accurate 2018 Equal Earth design.
At the session, 164 countries voted in favour of the resolution. Only the US voted no, with its representative saying the resolution was “superfluous”. There were six abstentions.
UN resolutions are non-enforceable, so countries and institutions will not be mandated to use only the new projection or forbidden from using the old one. However, the outcome is expected to result in an update of classroom curriculums and everyday technology given the wide usage of the Mercator projection in education, technology and governance.
Togo, which spearheaded a campaign for the resolution on behalf of the African Union, said the resolution “recognises and affirms that disproportionate cartographic representations, particularly those resulting from the Mercator projection, have had lasting cognitive, educational, cultural, geopolitical and socioeconomic effects, contributing to a drastic reduction in the perceived size of Africa and other regions of the world in the global collective imagination”.

On Friday, before the vote, France’s foreign minister spoke in support of the resolution. “[We] will abandon the Mercator projection in favour of map representations tailored to specific uses, more faithful to actual surface areas and in line with the recommendations of cartographers and scientists,” Jean-Noël Barrot said during a speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris, in a move seen as part of France’s push to increase goodwill among its former colonies. France will now use the Eckert IV projection, which is close to the Equal Earth projection recommended in the resolution.

Speaking before the resolution passed, Robert Dussey, Togo’s foreign affairs minister, said: “This discussion is not a political discussion [but] a scientific discussion, because there is scientific proof so we all have to accept the reality.”

Speaking before the vote, Dussey said: “To those who say why now, I say: why not? When we look at the world map … it is time for us to change the narrative.”

According to the creators, the projection was created in response to the decision of the Boston Public Schools to adopt the Gall–Peters projection for world maps in March 2017, to accurately show the relative sizes of equatorial and non-equatorial regions. The decision generated controversy in the world of cartography due to that projection's extreme distortion in the polar regions. At that time, Šavrič, Jenny, and Patterson sought alternative map projections of equal areas for world maps, but could not find any that met their aesthetic criteria. Therefore, they created a new projection that had more visual appeal compared to existing projections of equal areas.

As with the earlier Natural Earth projection (2012) introduced by Patterson, a visual method was used to choose the parameters of the projection. A combination of Putniņš P4ʹ and Eckert IV projections was used as the basis.

Quel est l’intérêt d'Eckert IV par rapport à Equel Earth hormis son ancienneté et que l'on évite ainsi de migrer vers le n-ième standard à la mode ? Est ce que quelqu'un sait pourquoi est ce qu'Eckert IV n'a pas plutôt été choisi à L'ONU ?

Je dirais que c'est une manière élégante pour le décideur français de donner un recul historique au débat et de s'éloigner de la perspective "justice sociale" progressiste un peu bas du front qui semble être favorisée par l'ONU, tout en ayant l'air d'être dans l'avant garde.

Si elle était plus "précise / exacte" (accurate), elle aurait été dénommée "Accurate Earth", et non pas Equal Earth.

En pratique tout ceci ne me choque pas.

Quelque soit la projection choisie, aucune n'est choquante, ce qui est plus gênant c'est plutôt les raisons potentielles du choix.

Aucune représentation cartographique n'est parfaite (hormis le globe :v) mais avoir une représentation plus précise de la taille relative des territoires n'est pas une mauvaise chose.

L'intérêt de la projection Mercator c'est qu'elle respecte les angles ce qui est essentiel pour la navigation.

Mais la route la plus courte, orthodromique, n'est pas droite (en général) sur Mercator comme sur les autres projections sauf la projection gnomonique. 

En effet la seule représentation fidèle est un globe terrestre.

C'est aussi mon avis, et je n'apprécie pas trop cette histoire vulgarisée qu'on nous propose : Mercator c'était nul voire raciste, on introduit enfin une nouvelle projection qui résout le problème. Ça passe complètement à côté de la plaque qui est que (1) on sait depuis toujours qu'aucune projection ne sera parfaite dans le sense qu'elle conservera les angles, les tailles et les distances à la fois, c'est mathématiquement impossible, (2) toutes les projections, et il en existe des centaines depuis des siècles, font des compromis sur certains de ces aspects, (3) différentes projections sont utilisées depuis toujours encore une fois pour différents objectifs, personne n'a imposé Mercator.

À partir de là si l'ONU ou la France décide d'utiliser officiellement telle ou telle projection dans leur documents, si ladite projection n'est pas trop dégueulasse (genre Gall Peters) ça n'a rien de choquant et pas grand chose d'intéressant non plus.
